5When you have to put together BIG wires, use this!  Feb 07, 2002 By Atlanta Network Guy
Soldering irons are great for electronics component and circuit board assembly, but when the occasion comes when solder has to be applied to big wiring (or removed from it), the volume of metal sucks away the heat faster than an ordinary iron can apply it. On those occasions, only a solder gun or a gas torch applys enough joules of energy for the job, and a solder gun does a much neater job without endangering nearby possesions. Weller is the industry leader for these devices. Changing tips is a bit of a hassel, and somebody at Weller needs to revisit that engineering, but its overall a very nice tool for what it does.

5Soldering iron  Dec 01, 2007 By Dr. Ross M. Tucker
This Weller soldering iron is not the heavy duty model. I use it for small soldering jobs around the house. For these purposes, it is nicely adequate.
I like the carrying case as the last iron did not have one and ended up bouncing around in my kit bag loose. I could never find the solder. The light and two levels of heat are also convenient.

4Caution: changes in kit  Sep 07, 2008 By A. Koehler "-"
Caution to buyers: Weller (Cooper) has changed the contents of the kit. The product description says that the gun has dual lights - it doesn't, it has one bulb - and that the 8200PK kit contains a flux brush and a soldering aid tool: it doesn't have these in it at present. Obviously Cooper wanted to cost-reduce the contents but did not update the description vendors use. Tonight I shopped at three retailers and at every one the kit did not have the full claimed contents. One other problem: just try finding a retailer who carries the tips in stock. Fry's, Home Depot, Loewes did not. Only Orchard Supply in the SF Bay Area actually had them. Aside from this, the gun is functionally a good one and I have always been fond of Weller guns and will continue to buy them.

5Great multi-purpose soldering gun  Mar 08, 2010 By Michael L. Laughlin
The Weller brand of soldering guns has been around for many decades. An uncle of of mine has been using the same one for over 30 years. The soldering gun I received is identical to his, minus the battle scars of course. Hopefully it will be as durable. The ubiquity of this soldering gun also means that replacement tips will be available for the foreseeable future.

The soldering gun is a dual heat model which makes it quite versatile. On low heat, it works well to solder components on a printed circuit board. On high heat, it works well with point to point connections. For example, it is powerful enough to solder a ground wire to the chassis in a tube amp.

5Top Gun  Dec 12, 2009 By N. Branscombe "N. Branscombe"
I bought this soldering gun for my 14 year old grandson because I have had the same gun since I was his age. I have used it as both a hobyist and a professional for many years with never a problem. It works equally on diodes and transistors ( with a heat sink and 4 sections of #12 wire twisted together. I have no gripes with it.
