5Perfect Tool for the Right Job  Sep 03, 2009 By Nameless Faceless User
As the picture on the box suggests, this tool is designed for cutting and punching through nylon rope and webbing. The knife attachment did a great job of making a clean, precision cut through a woven nylon strap. It was a bit slow, so I kicked in the Boot Heat and it worked like a charm. One of the other tools made a perfect hole through which I could pass a screw.

You do not want much more heat than this because the nylon will burn, melt excessively, and give off nasty fumes. I had been using my temperature controlled soldering iron for punching holes in nylon straps, but I was ruining my soldering iron tips.

Which brings me to this. Although this tool does get hot enough to melt solder, it is not a soldering iron. Sure, you can use this "in a pinch" for a one-time job. Any soldering iron which specifies watts instead of degrees is not made for the serious soldering of electronic components.

To solder electronic components, you want - no, you *need* a soldering iron which is temperature controlled to 700 degrees. Delicate components, 600 degrees. Connectors, heavy speaker wire, battery terminals, 800 degrees. Don't buy a cheap pencil type iron to solder on a regular basis because you will become disappointed and frustrated.

If you want to cut nylon webbing and nylon rope without fraying, or score plastic, this is the perfect tool. It leaves a clean, factory-looking edge on your repair work.

4Powerful, lightweight, and worked great.  Mar 28, 2009 By DrPhysics
I found that I needed much more power than my old 30W soldering iron could provide, to complete a thick wire (AWG 10) to large battery-clamp connection. The "boost" feature in this soldering gun was exactly what I needed and worked great.

2Looks substantial, but it's not  Jul 03, 2008 By J. Schlauch
At first blush this iron looks fairly substantial. It looks like it should be able to solder thick wire and handle other heavy jobs but its quirky "Therma Boost" feature that is supposed to make it a 130 watt iron is lacking.

At its heart this is a 30 watt iron. The idea is that you can pull the trigger to get a "boost" of heat and make it a 130 watt iron. Unfortunately, once you pull the trigger, you get a brief increase of heat, but then the "boost" turns off and it gets cool again. The iron has a built-in duty cycle limiter so you can only activate the boost feature once every couple minutes or so. If you weren't done soldering when the boost turns off, then too bad -- you'll have to wait a few minutes before you can get another boost of heat.

Overall this iron is kind of gimmicky and you should get an iron that perform at a high wattage for a 100% duty cycle.

5great tool  Mar 18, 2012 By Lee hawk
This is a great tool. The 130watt boost really dose the job. People that don't think the
boost works need to read the instructions that come with the tool befor bad mouthing it.
It dose just what it claims it will do. Great for electronic repair work. Thats what I
bought it for. Recommend this tool for electronic and other light to medium work.
It will not work for plumbing copper pipes. Get Real!!!!

4nice when used right  Feb 13, 2012 By polrbear
I bought this tool two or three years ago. I mainly use it for heat-sealing edges of synthetic fabrics, particularly webbing (nylon, polypropylene, and polyester). For the webbing work, this thing is a champ. It cuts thick one or two inch webbing quickly and easily (although it may need the boost for cuts that are both wide and thick), and is warmed up again for the next cut by the time I've measured out the piece.

I tried this for cutting nylon fabric for sewing. It works, but the device simply does not have the power to do more than fine cuts. It doesn't have the combination of power and mass to make long cuts of fabric, yet can handle touch-ups just fine. [For fabric cutting, try the Engel Hot Knife, especially with the cutting foot. The original is not on Amazon, but here is a similar item: http://www.amazon.com/Fabric-Cutter-Sealer-Hot-Knife/dp/B00460KVRM/ref=sr_1_47?ie=UTF8&qid=1329150057&sr=8-47]

Ultimately, for the price and convenience, this is a nice tool. However, it can't do everything that a device of its wattage should do, so don't expect it to be a substitute for the right tool if the task demands quality work.
