Good overall iron Nov 27, 2008
By Kenneth Saylor This is a good, general purpose iron. It is well suited for light to medium work. I purchased it for this reason.

So hot it instantly vaporizes all flux. Used to solder battery bars. Apr 24, 2011
By James I purchased this for soldering battery bars onto a bunch of sub c batteries because my 25 watt blue handled Weller iron did not have thermal capacity. This one has more then enough mass to it to not loose tip heat when heating a large surface but when I kept having trouble getting solder to stick. I kept getting that burnt on flux crap that causes the solder not to stick. Normally flux works by creating some kind of gas barrier that allows the solder to stick to the other metal. If you get to much it will prevent it from sticking. Finally I unplugged the soldering iron and at a certain point between when I unplug it and it cools down too much it worked perfectly. I think it was too hot and vaporizes all the solder instantly. If there was some sort of device that could control the tip heat and maybe lower it some I think it would have worked better. Maybe a light dimmer switch between this thing and the outlet. I imagine there has to already a product like that.
As a side note. Mine gets hot, really hot. Like the part with the heating element glows bright orange. I have never had a soldering iron do that and I have been soldering for RC stuff and also because I am an engineer for years. Never seen one get that hot. Is that normal for these 80 watt irons?

Great heat for the price Jul 04, 2010

I needed to replace some NiCD batteries for a drill I have. The new Battery pack was $100 and I could buy the individual cells for <$20, so I decided to replace them myself. The only ways to connect the cells was to spot weld or solder them with heavy duty wire. I needed a hi power (wattage) solder iron and they cost as much as the new battery pack. Found this slightly lower wattage soldering iron for a good price and it works great! Now whenever one of my battery packs go out on my many cordless devices I can replace the cell myself. The biggest benefit is you can find higher capacity cells than what the OEM battery pack usually provides, so your devices will run longer between charges.

By Mickey There is not much to say this is an inexpensive iron... does its job. Never lasts anywhere near what they say. I got it at a good price.
