3Lacking accuracy  Oct 27, 2010 By Reviewer
This is a review for Stanley 43-609 Torpedo Level. How on earth it got merged with reviews for other Stanley FatMax tools - that I do not know.

======================
This is the least expensive brand name level with a 360 deg. rotating vial. Comparable Stabila cost three times more. I went to a large hardware store to buy it, because I wanted to be able to pick a good one.

Out of a dozen levels on the shelf I was able to select six that had their magnets aligned with the level's groove, and the rest went back on the shelf. Then I placed each of the six "good ones" on a clean flat surface and then rotated it horizontally 180 deg. to see if the air bubble in the fixed vial shows the same position at both directions. Only two levels of the six did not show visible difference. And both of them passed vertical test as well.

So, the quality of workmanship is not there. This item is made offshore. It has appearance of excessive "sturdiness" which comes with added weight of it. The level is described as "11-3/4-inch" long for some weird reasons, but in fact it is 10-inch long. It would be smart to get some kind of a 10+ inch long pouch for it to protect it from damage. E.g. a bottle tote should work.

I'm giving it three stars for the rotating vial, which is very useful for duplication of angles. I'm removing two stars for having to select an acceptable quality level out of a dozen.

Please, see my uploaded pictures.

=====================
EDIT: Some dumb-asset merged these reviews for a torpedo level with Stanley fubar reviews and Stanley chalk box reviews. That was very very smart..... NOT!
=====================
EDIT2 (April 19, 2011): Reviews for the level are no longer merged with other tools' reviews, and hopefully they will stay that way.

I contacted Stanley with the following message:

"In the description of Stanley 43-609 Magnetic Torpedo Level, you have <>, which is completely wrong: there is no "Height" in that tool and no "11.75 inches" in it, anywhere. It should say "length" instead of "height" and its length is exactly 10 inches. Will somebody at Stanley be able to correct it? I very highly doubt it. Cheers!"

4Good heavy duty level  Jan 12, 2012 By Mark Downing Heese "MDH"
Good level, dunno that I'd go "great" on it, but it is very very good.

Extremely heavy duty, strong magnet, and one adjustable level makes for a very solid torpedo level. May be a little too large to make it a comfortable back pocket torpedo level or for some work belts.

Amazons price crushes any lowes or home depot price as usual.

4A great 360 level.  Apr 04, 2011 By Max Power "Max Power"
Bostitch and Stabila both make a torpedo level like this one. The most solidly made one is the Stabila one, but it is $65 at the cheapest. The fatmax and stabila both have lifetime vial warranties. Bostitch has no warranty on their torpedo, although they do have 100yr warranties on some of their other levels (receipt required). The stabila is made in Germany, the fatmax is made in taiwan. The stabila warranty doesn't require a receipt, but I believe the fatmax warranty does - it's harder to find information on their warranty. The fatmax one I got is level, and is well made, mostly of steel, with a milled flat edge. The earth magnets are strong, and more than enough to hold the level on a piece of metal, such as corrugated steel, or nails (assuming they are steel). The 360 level is a stiff turn which is good, so it doesn't change on you, but it is plastic. But even the stabila one is, and that's the best there is on the market. If money is no object, or you are a pro builder, I'd get stabila, for the warranty alone, which anyone who owns stabila could tell you isn't even needed because they are built so good. If you are a recreational remodeler I'd go with fatmax - being off a few degrees wont break you on a small scale project.

5Stanley 11 3/4" Fat Max Magnetic Torpedo Level  Jul 29, 2011 By James L. Dooley
This is an excellent product and very durable. I give it 5 stars because it is a bit heavy and durable. It does have plastic inserts that hold the level bubble, but it is still sturdy event. Highly recommend and Amazon had the best price when I reviewed these type levels. Hope this helps.
