where is my 3.5 AMP HOUR BATTERY Aug 14, 2011
By Sheldon Johnson The Battery that I received is a 3.3Ah instead of the 3.5Ah that I ordered and that was on my packing slip. Whats up with that?
3.3 Amp-hour, but works fine Dec 03, 2011
By John S. Reid Yes, the battery is actually rated at 3.3 Amp-hours (and not the 3.5 A-H indicated in the product listing). I'm guessing that Panasonic either (i) rerated this battery to its correct listing (having overrated this battery initially), or (ii) modified the battery to the lower A-H rating for some valid reason (such as safety). To be honest, I don't see any difference in the life of the 3.3 A-H battery from the "original" 3.5 A-H unit. What's more, this is still the most powerful replacement battery you can get for the Panasonic 18V tools (the non-Panasonic replacement batteries being rated at 3.0 A-H or less - even as low as 2.0 A-H!). Okay, having addressed the "Amp-Hour" issue, let's get to other matters. I gave this battery 4 stars because it only appears to have a life of about 5 years, and is rather expensive. While I recharge all of my power tool batteries every 4 months (whether they get used or not), I was surprised to find that the life of the battery deteriorated significantly after 5 years. (But, come to think of it, I don't recall any rechargeable battery that has lasted much more than 5 years. My tools are mostly for home and hobby use, so they don't really get much use, which could account for my low battery life.) At least Panasonic still offers a replacement battery! Some cordless tool manufacturers (who shall remain nameless) seem to phase-out their replacement batteries every 5 years so that the consumer is stuck with buying a whole new tool set, and not just a replacement battery. Beyond the battery itself, the Panasonic 18V cordless tools are the best due to their silky-smooth operation and rather compact size (as compared to competitors in the 18V and over category). I also have a Makita 28V cordless tool system, and the DeWalt 36V cordless tool system, but I always seem to turn to my Panasonic 18V system when I want to do a job. So if I have to replace 2 batteries (I like to have a spare on hand) every 5 years at $110 per battery, that's $220 over 5 years, or $44/year. To me, that's well worth the cost of having my Panasonic 18V cordless tools available to me. (I only hope that Panasonic continues to keep making replacement batteries for this system.)
