The large, versatile Osprey Porter 90 Backpack has the storage capacity you need for big trips and includes features to get you through the airport and onto your destination. The massive 5,500cu inch main compartment holds a week's worth of gear with ease, and several internal mesh pockets keep it organized. Stash smaller items in the top pocket, and keep reading material in the front slot for quick access to ward off boredom at a layover. Osprey made the Porter 90 Backpack's waist-belt and shoulder straps stowable to keep them from snagging in an airport conveyor and the zippers lockable to keep out thieves.

4Porter 46 - 3.5 stars.  Aug 20, 2009 By aa17
The ideal rating for this bag would be 3.5 stars, but I can't give it that. I've got the porter 46, in black.
Overall this is a great bag that I'm sure will last a long time, but it has a few small problems that I think could have easily been addressed.

Firstly the good;
1 - The material the bag is made from is very strong.
2 - Once you use the compression straps, pretty much every pocket is inaccessible except the very handy and well placed top pocket. Points for having that.
3 - The shoulder straps and web-belt are substantial and not tacked on afterwards. Very good quality, although fiddly to put away. They work well, and are on the thin side as I prefer. That said, I wouldn't recommend this bag for a significant period of backpack use. The back panel isn't well suited to that purpose.
4 - It really is carry on friendly if you don't over pack it. I was convinced it wouldn't be allowed as a carry on but it was (porter 46 only).
5 - The compression system really does compress. When the bag's empty you can use it to flatten down the bag for easy storage.
6 - 2 internal and 2 external pockets, very useful.
7 - Straps either end of the bag to enable two people to carry it between themselves comfortably.
8 - Robust zips.
9 - I haven't put it to the test yet, but I suspect this bag is mildly water resistant, as there are no exposed zippers.

Admittedly, the more expensive osprey bags have a few of these features but I'm paying a three figure sum in dollars (or £71 rather) as it is.

1 - As a travel bag, it could do with internal compression straps/division. Now this isn't so much an issue for my carry on friendly (By BA standards) porter 46, but it really has to be for the porter 90
2 - There's no excuse for this bag to not come with a shoulder strap. It's not like the osprey one costs a forture either, I'd rather not have to go to the effort of getting one separately.
3 - If you pack the bag improperly and use the (excellent) shoulder straps, you may hurt your back as the bag can be "lumpy". The waypoint series doesn't have this issue, but costs far more and is much larger.
4 - I'd like to be able to rest this bag on it's side, but I can't for fear of damaging the side compression buckles. This problem would have been solved had they been recessed into the bag.
5 - Some may say this point is nickpicking, but it would have been useful to have carrying straps either side of the bag like normal gym bags have. I suspect the weight distribution would be better than just using the side handle.

The first time I used this bag, one of the webbing clips snapped off. I wasn't impressed. What did impress me was that after an email with a photo of the problem I had a free replacement from osprey 4 days later. Excellent customer service.

All that said, this is now my main travel bag and I'm sure it'll last me a long time. I would recommend it to a friend and to yourself. I'd also recommend you get a smaller day pack to go with it.

5Same External Dimensions as a 22" Rollaboard  Jan 27, 2010 By Nimajneb
It's difficult to push a stroller with young children through an airport when you're also pulling a Travelpro 22" rollaboard. This bag solves that dilemma. It has the exact same external dimensions as a 22" rollaboard (the largest piece of luggage that'll fit in an overhead bin), yet you can carry it on your back thereby freeing up both your hands for other things. In addition, given that it doesn't have the metallic frame of a rollaboard and is made with soft nylon, it's much lighter and actually has greater storage capacity. All in all, this is a great piece of travel luggage made with high quality materials and craftsmanship.

5Great travel duffle  May 10, 2010 By N. Young
This is a BIG bag. The compression straps really help keep the center of gravity closer to your body when you do not have a fully loaded pack. The backpack straps are not as comfortable as the more expensive Osprey conversion packs and do not offer the suspension of a true backpacking pack, but will get the job done for short-distance carrying.
