Little saw, big heart Oct 08, 2010
By Craig Lipson
"bartboyee"
I've owned the rest now I own the best. The Makita DCS34 came out of the box with only one thing on its mind, start me up and point me towards those trees. It gobbled em up and asked for more, anything that i could throw its way was no challenge for this little guy. I must admit that i was a little hesitant to consider this saw for purchase, mainly because i could only find one review on it but it seemed positive in most regards. And the fact that it's German made swayed me a bit too. I've used my fair share of Makita power tools through my 30 year+ construction career and have become a big fan of the brand. This saw has the look and feel of quality that exceeds the price i paid for it. Buy this saw, you won't be dissapointed

Chain was too tight... Mar 28, 2012
By Brutus Prior to this I owned a Homelite chainsaw. The Homelite would bog down and not rotate the chain so I tossed it to the curb, with a brand new chain on it, out of frustration. After assembling this Makita saw, and starting it, my worst fears came true. I started the chainsaw as per the instructions, and it started fine. I released the chain brake and press on the throttle--it stalled. I tried switching the choke back on but it stalled again. After restarting the saw I let it warm up bit and it worked a little better but nothing like the ones in videos I've seen on Youtube. I did finally get it working but it did not live up to my expectations for a new saw. I gave it a 4 anyway because I'm sure there's something I must be doing wrong, i.e.; chain too tight, bad fuel mixture, et cetera.
UPDATE: I'm giving this saw 5/5(formerly 4/5) because it is an awesome little saw. It is so easy to work on and adjust! The instructions say to tighten the chain until it snugs up to the bottom of the chain guide. This leaves a lot of room for interpretation. I had it too snug. After playing with it a few time I have it just right. Now it revs up like the pros!
NON RETURNABLE - BUY AMAZON = BUY TWICE May 06, 2012
By Markus I was unfortunate in getting a saw which failed on the first usage.
The auto stop mechanism jammed on after 10 minutes and is now permanently locked rendering the item useless.
Worse still, this is an item Amazon have deemed to be 'non returnable'; I have therefore lost all my money.
The only recommendation I can make is to buy this saw from a reputable dealer, which in this instance is clearly not Amazon.
In fact, in light of this experience I would strongly recommend anyone to study any and all item terms VERY carefully and not buy ANY ITEM from Amazon which cannot be returned.
Regardless of any initial perceived saving/s, the potential losses vastly outweigh any small savings on such items.
It would even seem safer to use Ebay, where you have the possibility of some recourse on faulty items, using Amazon on 'non returnable' items has the potential to cost you dearly.
In this instance my opinion is "buy Amazon = buy twice" - and as already said, my suggestion : ALWAYS READ RETURNS POLICY AND NEVER GAMBLE WITH THE RISK IF YOU CANNOT RETURN.
Simply A Class Act May 02, 2012
By Kisoboka The saw came with no damage resulting from shipping. It was very easy to put the bar and the chain on with the included tools. The manual was as easy as abc to follow. After getting the DCS34 ready, I pulled the cord once and the saw started without an issue. It was fun slicing down tree branches of different sizes with no effort whatsoever. The saw wasn't heavy and I did not feel any vibration. Makita engineering is simply a class act. Best engineering for the price. I would definitely recommend this spiffy machine anytime and anywhere. I feel like buying more and give to all my neighbors. SIMPLY A CLASS ACT.
I had bought this saw after my nightmare experience with my local Menards store.I had horrible experiences with a saw I bought at Menards. I hardly pulled the choke when the plastic choke handle broke. I returned it back to Menards only for the hardware dept. manager telling me it was "like I bought an F150, ran it into a wall, and return it back to the dealer". I feel like I want to take the Makita saw to Menards and show them how a genuine choke handle is made. NEVER WOULD I GO BACK TO MENARDS.
Not as Described Apr 30, 2012
By Unhappy I chose this saw because it was listed as being 8.2 pounds in the description. When I received it, the box had the weight of the saw listed as being 10.3 pounds. That dosesn't seem like much of a discrepancy but I was expencting 8.2 pounds. I am a grandma of almost 70 years and the extra weight makes a difference. The saw cannot be returned and therefore I am out over $200.
