12 AMP Power with SJS to Protect Gears
The 9564CV is powered by a 12 AMP motor with soft start for smoother start-ups. The five-stage variable speed dial (2,800 - 10,500 RPM) allows the user to match the RPM to the application. The electronic limiter stops the motor and reduces accidental motor overload and burnout, and the electronic speed control maintains consistent speed under load. Labyrinth construction protects the motor with a complex set of channels, prohibiting dust and contamination. In addition, the protective zig-zag varnish seals the motor and bearings from dust and debris by creating a barrier under rotation. The 9564CV is engineered with SJS, an innovation from Makita that protects the gears by automatically disengaging the motor should the grinding wheel accidentally catch or bind.

Comfort and Ergonomics
The 9564CV is built with comfort and ergonomic features for extended use. The grinder weighs just 4 pounds with a lock-on switch for easy operation. In addition, the side handle can be easily installed on either side of the tool, and the "tool-less" wheel guard adjustment provides easy clamping.

Variable Speed for Stone Work
The 9564CV is a versatile and powerful grinder with variable speed, allowing the user to set the RPM to the material. The variable speed control feature makes the 9564CV ideal for stone work, including polishing and grinding. The 9564CV is just another example of Makita's commitment to innovative technology and best-in-class engineering.

About Makita's Super Joint System (SJS)
Super Joint System (SJS) is an innovation from Makita engineering where the motor armature and spiral bevel gear are linked by a coil spring. If the grinding wheel catches or binds, the coil spring relaxes and disengages the gears from the motor. As the grinding wheel stops, the gears and motor are protected. Makita's growing line of SJS-equipped grinders includes models ranging from a 1/4" die grinder to a 7-inch angle grinder.

5Big-D Speaks  Nov 11, 2006 By Big-D
This grinder is just what I needed. I keep three different 4 1/2" grinders on hand, one with a thin cutting wheel, one with a flap-disc and this one, for heavy grinding in tight places. The power is equal to my 7" grinder, but much lighter and easier to handle. I enjoy the varible speed control and the size and fit of the Makita 9564CV fits perfect in my hand. I can use this grinder for extended periods of time without getting "writers-cramp" in my hands. It is a little heavier than other 4 1/2" grinders, but I expected that because of the 12 amp power. I have always enjoyed the comfort, style and reliability of Makita tools and this unit is no different. I usually perform a lot of research before buying any tool. Not only do I look at price, but mostly I want the most for my money. Makita provides all of my requests. I sometimes find better pricing than Amazon, but rarely do I receive my product as quick as when I order from Amazon. And I have never experienced anything arriving damaged or missing when I order from Amazon.

5Woody Ole Time Woodworker  Jun 29, 2006 By W. D. Clemmons "ole school woodworker"
Thanks for a GREAT product. The grinder arrived 1 day before scheduled. The packing was perfect. The grinder has no vibration. There are 5 variable speed settings. I used the grinder to sharpen 3 sets of lawn mower blades. Then used it to grind down the bolts holding the wood sides on my utility trailer. The grinder is very well balanced and a little on the heavy side. One handed grinding is uncomfortable. The switch is located on the side and is a positive detent for On and OFF. I look forward to many years of use.

5Best grinder ever???  Oct 14, 2008 By Tricky Dicky
I'm a contractor, and I buy the best tools I can find. Money is a distant second to quality, power, control, etc. I bought this to replace the Makita grinder that broke after only 20 years of commercial use (joke). I was going to get the same model, but decided to upgrade to this one. The soft start and variable speed were a big improvement. Much more control. This one has more power too so it doesn't bog down. Excellent device! I have large glove sized hands and the barrel grip was fine for me. If you have smaller hands, you might want to check for hand fit before purchase.

5Versatile tool has many uses  May 30, 2011 By TomK1 "tomk1"
I've not purchased every type of grinder to compare to this Makita, but I purchased this tool for three reasons: good location for the on/off switch, variable speed, soft start. Its the first 4.5" grinder I've owned and I didn't realize how versatile it is. I've already used it for cutting, sanding, grinding, cleaning rust with a wire brush assembly.

The tool isn't very heavy, but when grinding, you need to use two hands to keep it steady. It includes a hand grip that can be placed on either side of the grinder (or removed) which is a big help doing body work in tight places when you can't control which way you hold the tool.

The variable speed is especially handy for auto body work when you just want to clear away rust with a brush attachment, you put it on low speed and you won't damage the metal. For this reason alone I highly recommend the variable speed. With a brush attachment, I've now done in 6 weeks about 10 years of painting jobs because there wasn't a fast easy way to remove the rust. Well, now I have it.

The grinder is very powerful for its size; I was using this at a remote site with a 2000 watt generator, and you can hear the generator labor when you really bear down cutting or grinding (although a 2000 watt generator will produce 16 amps, more than enough for the tool)

Its been a while since I bought a tool that I've used this much and enjoyed. I put off cleaning an extremely rusted metal mailbox post for about 10 years. I tried hand brushing, sanders, and couldn't really get rid of all the rust. This tool took it off in under 10 minutes and I had it sealed with some POR-15 all in under 30 minutes.

If you're doing more than just cutting, get the variable speed: it makes this tool twice as useful.

One oddity: when I received this tool, it was dusty, almost like somebody from the factory with dirty gloves had picked it up and not bothered cleaning it. But the tool looked unused, I wiped it down and it clearly had never been used, and I have no issue, so I don't know if mine is an odd case, or whether the QC guy isn't careful.

3Buyer beware: CPO Makita is a rip-off re-seller. Use Amazon instead!  Jul 18, 2009 By Darin Agnew "Concrete cleaner"
DO NOT buy reconditioned tools like this from "CPO Makita". I made the mistake of purchasing this grinder from them, and they sent a tool that was DOA - dead on arrival. When I contacted them, they refused to replace or refund the order! Somehow, they managed to prevent any negative feedback as well, so don't be fooled by the 96% positive number, it is obviously rigged (because it doesn't include my experience at the least).

As for Makita grinders, they are above average, although I wouldn't know how this particular model works by comparison, because the one I received was DOA.
