A Masterpiece of a Power Tool Dec 20, 2007

I really can't explain the first, one-star customer review of this product at Amazon. I guess that you can get a lemon in anything. This is not a dangerous product, as the review said. Makita is a reputable manufacturer. This saw is and LOOKS high quality. It is beautifully finished and well balanced, with all of the controls and adjustments in the right places. The 5007MGA is essentially the same saw as the highly rated 5007MG, with an important safety improvement, an electronic brake. It also is a bit lighter, 10.1 vs. 10.4 lbs. Potential buyers should search Amazon for the customer reviews of the 5007MG. They will describe what a superb tool this saw really is. I have had two near-misses on other saws after the guard jammed with sawdust, keeping the rotating blade exposed after I set them down. So, I consider a blade brake a "gotta-have". I wish the consumer protection agencies would mandate them on all power saws. They cause more brush wear, but brushes are cheap compared to prosthetics. Unfortunately, after much looking around, this is the only saw of this type that I found that had one. So, I rate this saw as beyond best-in-class. It is in a class by itself. That said, I do have a few quibbles. The case should have room for more than one spare blade; the guard spring should not be exposed, but hidden like the DeWalt, to avoid sawdust jamming it; the case is a bit narrow, so you have to avoid pinching the cord while closing the case; and it is just average in weight (even a 1 lb. reduction helps a lot). That said, I also have to admit that I am a perfectionist regarding tools and an engineer who can't avoid analyzing everything that I buy. Don't walk, run, to buy this saw. Keeping all 20 fingers and toes intact and in all of the right places is just too important.

The Lexus of Circular Saws Jan 18, 2010
By Steve_in_TN I decided to upgrade from my 30 yr old B&D saw and almost bought the basic Milwaukee. Then I noticed they made one with a brake- which is a great idea. So I looked at the Milwaukee with brake. Then I noticed Makita also made one with a brake and indecision set in: I could not decide which brand to buy with the brake. To help with my decision I went to HD and looked at both- it then became an easy decision to buy the Makita 5007MGA even though it was slightly more expensive.
Looking at the Makita you can tell that the designers and engineers put some thought into it- it's not just a basic hammer-like power tool like the Milwaukee; instead the Makita has well thought out, almost sexy, "extra" detailed features for the user. The base is cast and has a nice thick lip on the blade side- the Milwaukee is stamped from ~.12" alum. All the levers on the Makita have nice rubber grips on them; the quick stops on the bevel adjustment on the Makita is also a great feature. Sure, you don't need these little features, but it shows that someone was thinking about more than mounting motor on a plate. The Milwaukee is the Chevy Malibu; the Makita is the Lexus; either will get the job done, but the Makita is a nicer tool. Oh, and this Lexus is unfortunately made in China, but the quality is perfect.
The saw has plenty of power and is as safe as any other saw so ignore the one bad review here wrt safety. The brake stops the blade in about half the time as my old B&D with no brake: ~3 seconds vs 6 (just counting off).
Negatives: As others have stated, the case is too small- you have to kink the cord at the strain relief which is not a good idea- the case needs to be 3" longer. The rip fence is too short to be of much use; this is ironic because the space for it in the case will accomodate a fence almost 2" longer. Fix those two things and it's perfect. It's odd that with all the detailed design put into the saw they missed glaringly obvious poor features on the case and fence. The case could also use some additional blade storage space although it's fine for at least two spare blades (all I have).

BEST SAW FOR THE EZ-SMART SYSTEM. May 24, 2009
By Eurekazone
"Dino Makropoulos"
WE TEST SAWS EVERY DAY. THE NEW MAKITA'S 5007=5008 mga'S AS WELL AS THE NEW 5104 (10" SAW) ARE THE BEST SAWS IN THE MARKET TODAY. GREAT POWER, LOW NOICE, NO VIBRATION,QUICK ST0P BLADE AND OVERSIZED LEVERS CONTROLS MAKES THIS LINE OF SAWS THE BEST SAWS TO USE ON THE EZSMART RAIL SYSTEM. SAME QUALITY SAWS IF MADE BY A GERMAN cO IT WILL BE OVER $1000.00. WE BUY THIS SAWS FROM AMAZON DUE TO GREAT SHIPPING AND SERVICE AND MODIFIED THEM TO INCLUDE THE SMART BASE AND DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM. sO FAR, WE HAD NO PROBLEMS AND UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE COMES UP WITH A BETTER SAW, WE WILL CONTINUE TO OFFER THE NEW MAKITA SAWS TO OUR CUSTOMERS. WE USE THE SAME SAWS IN OUR FACTORY EVERY DAY. NICE JOB MAKITA. THE OTHER SAWS THAT WE THINK ARE GREAT BUY IS THE NEW HITACHI SAW. REMEMBER TO BUY A SAW WITH ELECTRIC BRAKE, FEW MORE DOLLARS AND NEVER LOOK BACK. PC. 325 MAG, MILWAUKEE AND DEWALT WITH BRAKE ARE GREAT TOO. STAY AWAY FROM THE "PLUNGE TYPE SAWSW" LOW POWER AND AWKWARD TO USE WITH ANY SYSTEM.

Quality Product Aug 07, 2010
By Paul This is another quality product from Makita. I haven't had any problems with kickback whatsoever like in the other reviews, unless I am using the wrong blade for the job that I am doing.
I use the Diablo blades with this saw and it cuts great. I don't recommend using the one that comes with the saw.
