1Granite Counter Tops Beware  Nov 30, 2007 By Highpockets "Highpockets"
Warning! If you have granite counter tops, you may be in for a hassle. I bought an Insinkerator Model H-ViewSN-SS at Lowes ($279) to replace my second entry level Insinkerator unit. The Entry level units installed easily, but wore out quickly, so I decided to upgrade. If another brand -had been easily available locally, I probably would have bought another brand given the short lives of my first 2 units.

Anyway, when I went to install the new unit, the threaded tubing that is used to hold the unit in place was too short to extend below my granite. I went back to Lowes, and then to Home Depot, looking for a fix. Unfortunately, the threading on this tube is not standard. Finally, someone at HD told me that to use this with granite I must call the company and get an extension. They do not carry this part, but everyone with granite has this problem! I called the company the next day and they wanted to charge me for this piece. When I said "forget it, I'm taking this POS back", she "Spoke with her manager" and decided to send the piece free of charge -- "to arrive in 7 to 10 business days".

About 10 days later the tube arrived, and I went to install the unit, only to find that with the extension the unit would not snug up to the bottom of the counter. I had to run to my shop and make a washer out of a piece of 3/8" plywood.

Bottom line. If this cheapo company had spent 50 cents extra to make the threaded tube 1 " longer I probably could have installed this in 20 min. Instead, it's 2 weeks later and I have finally learned my lesson about this company's products. If it lasts as long as the last 2 units, I'll be looking for another brand of hot water dispenser in about 1 yr.

If you have Granite Counter Tops and plan to buy an Insinkerator unit. go to their web site and check that the tubing used to attach the unit is long enough for your counter tops. Better yet, buy another brand and save yourself some headaches.

4pricey item reised  Sep 06, 2007 By Zahara
When this item is combined with the tank and filter it is a very pricey item. The filter only filters out chlorine so is not needed if you don't have chlorine in your water. Perhaps a good plumber could plumb the filter out of the system. Also, the filters are expensive...$76+ for a two pack and you have to order them in most cases. I am having a problem with mine after two years...it's starting to not dispense water for up to 30 seconds after not being used for a few days. InSinkErator customer service has not as yet come up with a reason for this that fits my situation. Scheduling a warranty service through them is a hassle...they keep telling me what they think the problem is and I keep saying no it isn't, please schedule and that has yet to happen from there end. But I do love the unit when it works correctly.
The problem has been solved. It's the cheap plastic tank. The tank failed and leaked water which degraded the plastic and other parts. The water reacted with the plastic and was responsible for the taste, smell, etc. I have now disconnected two of them and will not replace them. Be aware that InSinkerator knows exactly what the problem is even though they deny it. The problems started wen they switched to the plastic tanks. Now they have a 'new' tank...stainless steel. I am sure there will be no problems with that but it's very expensive. I won't have another of their products based on their customer service and misleading.

3Convenient, but problematic  Nov 13, 2007 By ROBERT F. Areddy
I had this unit for 4 years before the tank failed. Unfortunately, the tank warranty is only 3 years. You'd think the heating element would go bad, but the tank actually developed a crack in it, and the unit would leak. After checking to see if I could buy just the tank, I found that several people had the same problem.

When working properly, it's great to have instant hot water to make tea, hot chocolate, or coffee, but I think I'm going to look at other brands and check their reviews before committing to another product by Insinkerator.

1Thanks for the reviews of this less than adequate hot water dispenser  Feb 15, 2010 By Michael Gold
I have installed dozens of Insinkerator products and, thanks to the Amazon reviews, have finally figured out why their hot water dispensers have failed so fast - it was a defective design that Insinkerator refuses to acknowledge. As a result, we are now looking for another brand of hot water dispensers to use (if anyone has a suggestion, we would appreciate it).

Also, when I called Insinkerator for support, they told me that the warranty was only one year and their only suggestion is to purchase their new tank (SST-FLTR). Whether the warranty was only one year or whether they were giving me incorrect information is of no further consequence - we will no longer install Insinkerator products in our rental units because I can no longer trust the Company to sell properly designed products.

1Insinkerator won't install  Jan 01, 2008 By General O'neill
Similar to another poster. If you have a nice kitchen with granite or marble countertop, chances are it's 1 inch thick. Then forget about buying Insinkerator. The threaded tubing for the nicer hot-cold models, as well as screw length for the cheapo default dispenser, is too short to install. It's meant for shallow depth counters.

Amazingly, Insinkerator doesn't mention this in their manuals nor on their website. I've cobbled a fix for one installation, but this was a problem for 4 out of 4 installs I've done. Just avoid Insinkerator and avoid the hassle.
