5THE BEST pocket knife I've ever owned  Dec 12, 2008 By Amazon Jack
I got my first Gerber Harsey Air Ranger knife about 10 years ago. I returned another Gerber knife I owned to their repair center for repairs (Gerber guarantees all their knives FOR LIFE !!) and they couldn't fix it because it was a discontinued model--so they offered to give me a knife from their current catalog (of equal value) to replace mine. After looking through their catalog, I spotted the Harsey Air Ranger (all metal, with checkered aluminum grips) and I chose it. When it arrived, I didn't know if I liked it or not. It didn't look like any of my other Gerber's, and it was WAY LIGHTER! Gerber's have a nice heft to them, and this one didn't, but I put it in my pocket and hardly noticed it was there. Hmmm, lighter might be better for a pocket knife anyway I thought. The aluminum grips were very light, strong, and checkered like a gunstock. Even when wet, they allow for a good grip. I never baby a knife, (even if it's an expensive one) as I use my knives every day, from cutting cardboard boxes, rope, wires and wood. A knife must earn its keep--if its going to be in MY pocket. My original Air Ranger is still in my pocket, still working every day--just like me. When I've finally sharpened it down to a nub, I'll start using my new one from Amazon--though that probably won't be for a least another 10 years or so. If you're a working man like me, you can't go wrong with a Gerber Air Ranger which was designed by a world class custom knife maker (Bill Harsey).

If I could change one thing about the design of this knife, it would be to round off the square edges on the handle, to make it more pocket friendly. I've modified mine with a Dremil Tool, to perfection. It comes in and out of my pocket smoothly, and doesn't wear out the pocket liner on my jeans either. I've uploaded some photos, in case anybody is interested in doing the same.

My only beef with this knife is it's now only available in the half-serrated blade style. I prefer a smooth finely honed edge. Serrations are for steak knives and kitchen cutlery. I use a Lansky 3-stone hone to keep mine razor sharp. My blade has the original AUS-8A alloy steel, and you can shave with it. Several years back, on an extended hunting and camping expedition, I actually did just that.

4It's a good knife and I was expecting more from Gerber  Mar 27, 2011 By Bob Tobias "Robert Tobias"
First, this is not a $60 knife that you're getting on sale for whatever Amazon is currently charging. I paid $17 a few weeks ago and today it's a bit more. A more appropriate list price for this knife, given the quality, features and what you do/don't get, would be closer to $30.

The good: The knife is reasonably sized and light enough to have in your pocket all the time. The checkered aluminum Bolster/Handle gives a good grip and feel and the blade (initially) quite sharp. The locking mechanism has not failed yet,

The not-so-good: This is not what many consider a one-hand opener; as delivered you cannot flick it open either with your thumb or a wrist snap. After backing off the pivot screw and adding some Teflon lube (Finish Line DRY Teflon Bicycle Chain Lube, 4-Ounce Drip Squeeze Bottle) there is still a bit too much tension against the blade from the locking mechanism to do it consistently. Finally, the locking mechanism is a bit stiff and it can sometimes be a bit awkward to disengage it.

As for the ambidextrous-ness... The thumb studs are but the pocket clip is not. You're stuck with it in one position. That means if you want to clip the knife to a left-side pocket then it's coming out in your left hand backwards. Frankly, given the opening mechanism this is not a knife to use if you need it instantly available. As soon as I can find T-6 Torx wrench the clip comes off.

Bottom line: This is a good, but not great, knife for the money. After removing the pocket clip it is a good size and weight to carry in my pocket. However, the "list price" makes it appear to be a much better value than it is and there are many similar values in the price range.

5Ranger Lite  Oct 12, 2009 By B. A. Dilger "floating world"
A Gerber knife has been in my possession for over 35 years. My first was the Folding Sportsman I, which I liked so much I got a Mk I (II) in the military. Later I bought a FS II, a folding Gator, and a Suspension multi-tool. Living in an urban legal system I've had to shrink the length of my pocket knife down, and choose the Gerber Air Ranger. The handle is two CRC-checkered aluminum plates, for a great grip, and the blade (3.26") opens in either hand. This locking blade has a small clip attached for wherever you put it. This is an extremely light knife and is barely noticable. Some articles have said that the blade is AUS-8 stainless, which holds an edge better. Whatever its composition, it's half-way serration and clip point blade put a lot of power in your hands for various duties. A great work knife for all-around chores.

5Great Knife!  Apr 10, 2009 By T. Hunsaker
I bought this knife back in 2003, its been at my side (in my back pocket) since then. Its been through some torture, I went about 2 years without sharpening it, but it soldiered on. I've really beat this knife up, but its still going strong and in great working condition, tougher than nails, its been dropped many times. I'm just a little bummed that I'll have to shell out more than I originally paid if it gets lost.

2Get another model...  Feb 14, 2012 By 73camaroman
Well it's a very sharp and durable knife, but it hast one major problem. I've tried two of these knives. The first one I received had a screw missing, so I returned it. The replacement didn't have any screws missing, but the latch is very sketchy. When opening the knife, you have to be sure that you open the blade all the way in order to get the latch to pop out completely and lock. I fixed this by opening and closing the knife many(thousands of)times to "break it in." But really, it's a safety issue, and shouldn't need to be done. The thing is, it turns out my dad purchased the same knife and had the same problem with the latch. He actually cut himself with the knife because he didn't realize it wasn't latched completely. The break in process may be able to be expedited by taking the knife apart and using a file of grinder, but again, the knife should work correctly out of the box. I gave it 2 stars just because it has been a very nice durable knife now that I've got it broken in. I've had it almost a year now, use it daily, and it still doesn't need sharpened. I'd go with another Gerber model.
