If you've had Gerber multitools from 10-15 years ago, prepare to be disappointed Mar 09, 2010
By Jeffrey I have a Gerber multi-tool from the early 90's. As far as functionality, they are essentially the same. A lot of people have trust in Gerber from these tools of this era and they were very popular. It still works to this day with literally thousands of uses.
But I wanted a new one because even that one is getting a little worn. I understand this is the compact version, not their top of the line, but the difference is drastic. The gauge of the steel is much thinner than the old Gerbers, it almost feels flimsy. I would NOT trust putting any kind of real pressure on the pliers.
I played with the 600 series at a store just to see if this was a nerfed model, and while they were better, still fell victim to the same problems.
That said, if you haven't been spoiled by higher quality early models like I have, these are still good and functional tools. They do exactly what they are supposed to. I am just sad to see how "lightweight" the construction has gotten. I could not consider this a lifetime tool anymore.
Also, the knife is completely different, the knife edge is completely straight. The one in the picture is the knife that Gerber's have always had but I guess they updated it. It looks silly, but it probably works just as well.

I use these on a daily basis, they are my most used tool. I work on equipment and trucks all day so i really put these pliers to the test daily. I put it on my belt every morning just like i put my wallet in my pocket. Its natural after u use it regularly. great tool, love mine!

An unmached received product the one presented on Amazon cataloge Dec 09, 2009
By E. Geller I have 3 Gerber multi-plier. I like this particular one hand opening style.
Very good tuff steel althogh very brakeable.
The 2 pliers I have bought resently are different then the one presented on the virtual cataloge. The knife part is completely different and I don't realy like it. I like the style of the one presented. I wish I could insert a picture of the one I have received to show what I mean.
Too bad Amazon suplly stuff different than the one ordered.
Seems durable, but frustrating to get at tools Nov 08, 2011
By Matthew This Gerber multitool has gotten quite a bit of work (more so than the full size tools it substitutes), because I generally have it on me and don't want to hunt for the perfect tool. It's durable, but I get frustrated because the plier mechanism that opens the handles has to be at the perfect spot to access the tools inside them. The hinge and pliers slide into the handle, and need to be pushed in and then pulled up.)
This isn't a one-handed tool.
I wanted all black and got it Apr 14, 2011

I have a comparable leatherman (10 years) and also a swiss army multi tool (25 years). As indicated in the title I have recently been into all black tactical looking gear, so that is a big plus to this gerber. Functionally, I really like how the individual tools (especially the blade) lock in the open position, it's a solid safety feature. This is also unique in that the pliers open differently, come out and retract into the handle. It was pretty tight upon receiving, I recomend oiling it up and letting it sit for a couple of days.
Overall, I will buy another Gerber mutli tool.
Besides Gerber simple makes cool stuff.
