5older version is gold. (without the carbide insert cutters.)  Feb 27, 2011 By Sgt. Rooster
I bought this because the gerbers we get issued when we go over seas have the carbide cutter inserts and not the standard cutters. this version, has all the same tools, but a standard set of cutters, which work amazing, i was able to cut a penny in half with no problems. the carbide cutters broke at this attempt. It has all the tools i need as a soldier and it has done very nicely for me, the pliers deploy with a nice snap, one handed as advertised, the tools all come out very smoothly and the locking mechanism is very strong and easy to use, the knife blade serves it purpose and slices very well, although not razor sharp at first, with a very little amount of sharpening on my lansky sharpening system it now cuts like a razor (25 degrees) the other tools work very nicely, ive used the can opener quite a bit and it works like a dream. the file, although not the best out there works very well. the serrated blade isnt that sharp and kinda sucks...they should have switched it for a saw blade. the sheath it comes with is very high quality in my opinion, i like it alot better than the acu sheath i was issued. the pliar head is larger than most other multitools and opens very wide. yeah the handles come closer together than other tools, but this is alooot better when working in tight spaces because i can get a better grip on nuts or wires, and i have never had any trouble with it pinching my hands as others have complained about. they do kinda wobble if not fully closed, but if you are gripping something they are very tight and strong, better than the leatherman wave i used to own, as they were kinda small and the handles were very wide spaced when gripping something, it made it hard to have a tight grip. I personally like the way gerber 600s feel when using them, i have never once felt that it was going to fail me. leathermans are great multitools dont get me wrong, but being in the army and using alot of different tools i feel that the 600's are better for my needs and do just fine with me, if not better than the wave. there was one draw back when i got this, I had bought the bit kit for my wave and that was awesome, so many different screw drivers to use...and the gerber bit kit for the 600 did not offer as many different screw drivers, so i went and bought the bit adapter for the leatherman supertool 300 (which makes all the screw drivers used in the wave bit kit usable for the supertool 300) and guess what? IT WORKS WITH THE MP 600 AS WELL!!!!!!! You just slide the bit adapter on the 600's philips head and it fits just fine! problem solved. :) this is a great tool and it will serve you well, get the one without the carbide cutters!!!

3Good, not great.  Dec 26, 2011 By Diesel442
Generally speaking, I'm pretty happy with this multi-tool, though I'm not sure it's worthy of the Gerber name and price tag. It has a nice feel in the hand and an extremely solid construction, but I've come to expect a little better quality from Gerber than what they've delivered in this product.

First thing first, the picture provided in the Amazon description is not completely accurate. The picture depicts a pass-through slit on the blades and file which would allow you to grip from either side, but in reality it is a standard one-sided indentation found only on the outer edge. Not really an issue in overall functionality, but disappointing that you don't get exactly what is advertised.

Second, the straight blade is flat-out knicked up and unsusable out of the box. Absolutely no chance of getting a clean, straight cut without sharpening first. Again, not a complete loss of function (a quick sharpening will easily remedy the problem) but I've never had anything less than a perfect edge on any Gerber that I've ever bought in the past.

Last, the finish is a complete disappointment for the Gerber brand. With a potentional need to carry in a deployed environment, the matte black finish is certainly a plus. However, it's completely covered in minor scratches, and so dirty and unfinished that it will completely coat your hands with a black film the first time you handle it. That, combined with the damaged straight blade, conveyed to me that these are just mass-produced and thrown around in bins. No care seemed to be taken to ensure a quality finished product is delivered to the customer, and there doesn't seem to be any concern that you have to give these a full cleaning and sharpening yourself to bring them up to their potential. Once again, not an impact on the ultimate function of the tool, but just a slap in the face to the Gerber name.

All in all, I'm happy to have this multi-tool, and I have no doubt that it will serve it's purpose well. From a purely functional perspective, it's well built, well balanced, and will be an excellent everyday carry in any environment. However, when you consider what you're paying for the Gerber name, they've certainly dropped the ball on quality and I'm not sure it's the best value out there for the money.

5Best Value Multi-tool  Jan 06, 2009 By AEP
Useful for daily household jobs, and wonderful for camping and any outdoor activity. Sturdy and long lasting. Have had a Gerber multitool very similar to this one ourselves for 10+ years and still use it with no problems. This one was purchased as a gift.

3Nice but not the quality I remember  Nov 17, 2011 By Dave
I have a number of Gerber products from recent times and from long ago. They have always been excellent quality, including the LMFII I recently purchased. This multi-tool however does not have the same quality I have come to expect from Gerber. The blade was rough and needed immediate attention to allow it to be used and the overall finish is not typical of Gerber Tools.

5Gerber Multi-Tool  Oct 21, 2011 By bmw325alex
I've wanted one of these for a long time. They're great! I originally had a Leatherman multi-tool and soon after I got it Gerber came out with the locking tools on the pliers. Not only is that innovative, it's essential to not hurting yourself!
I've never understood the fishing accessory. Couldn't they put something more useful- anything would be better than that.
