3Mid to Light Category Hiker  Feb 11, 2011 By WTH
I think I may very well be the first anywhere to review this boot. As such, I'll try to be both thorough and yet efficient. First, please know that I own a number of Chippewas and love them.

This boot is on the light- to midweight level for a walker (not a hiker). Although the tread is very aggressive, the sole itself is significantly - and somewhat surprisingly - flexible. Seems an odd combination. For a true hiker, the boot needs to have solid support for the foot, which this one only moderately provides. At the ball of the foot, flex is right at 90 degrees! The tread is a soft Vibram option, which will probably make it good on wet or slippery surfaces.

The shoestrings provide easy tightening, with loose eyelets down low and large open hooks up higher; unfortunately, for a longer foot, I would prefer to have the eyelets carry closer down toward the toes (i.e., five or six instead of four). I was unable to properly tighten the boot around my foot past mid-arch.

The overall fit is soft and quite comfortable. However, I ordered medium width and, even with super-thick socks it was a very roomy fit. Again, not good for a hiking boot. Yes, I have a narrow, long foot, but Chipps normally fit me quite well. This boot seems overly roomy, even for a work boot.

What I really like is the styling and color of this boot. Mens' hikers tend to be dull, boring, shades of gray. This one is a solid earthy brown/deep tan and a good tone of deep green for the mesh. The boot looks great on the foot and I would love to keep them, but will be returning them for the exact reason that I live in Switzerland and need a solid hiking boot for the Alps. I do hope Chippewa continues to refine this model, as it has solid atributes that, once refined should make this into a good hiking boot.

I gave the boot only three stars because, even for a walker or work boot, it still needs refinement until it can have a solid category. I wear work and hiking boots every day and need a proven boot that can meet the demands of rocky, mountainous, wet, slippery, and muddy conditions. It pains me to rate a Chippy so low, but I must be honest.

4Nice Boot  Nov 22, 2011 By Joseph T. Dietz "joedietz"
I have only owned these boots for a couple weeks, but wanted to give a quick review.

So far, I really like them. They were very comfortable as soon as I put them on. I love that they are a hiking style boot with a steel toe. They look great, are light weight and walk well, yet they still feel sturdy. The one complaint I have is that they are a little too roomy. I have a long (size 12) narrow foot and when I tighten the laces all the way, there is still some wiggle room inside the boot. I don't mind this as of yet, but will report back later.

I do a fair amount of tree climbing and plan to use these boots for that purpose. I will update later to report on their durability.
